Welcome!

What's the Magic Number?

As of today, January 7, 2008, we have found homes for 1,723 animals! There is no stopping us! In December alone, over 70 animals were adopted into permanent homes!

Our big question from the public is, "Isn't it hard to get attached and see them leave?" Our answer is, "Heck no!" Our job is to find homes for these animals and see them find families who love them and want to care for them! While we do get attached to these animals, it makes us smile to know that we are finding good owners for them.

The Myth of Adoption Fees

Occasionally, we get the comments like, "These are animals needing homes, so why does it cost to adopt one?" While these animals are homeless, we don't just get an animal in the shelter and stick it right on the adoption floor. Along with the great care that our animals receive, this is what your dog or cat will go home with:

A full health exam-from the ends of their ears to the tips of their tails

All animals are de-wormed and de-flead

All vaccinations that can be done on the animal at that age. In most cases, this includes the 1 year rabies vaccination. These include the DHLPPC for dogs and the DRCCH for cats

Dogs are checked for heartworm and are given a preventative

Cats are FELV/FIV tested

All adopted animals go home with a collar and engraved tag, as well as a 5 pound bag of Science Diet Food

AND ALL THE ANIMALS ARE SPAYED OR NEUTERED!

The Big Rescue

You may have heard of the rescue that the Kearney Area Humane Society did in Mason City where we rescued over 35 dogs. Some of those dogs have now been placed on the adoption floor and are waiting for good homes. These are dogs that are so grateful for a clean, dry and cool place to be.

We want to send a special thank you out to the entire community for all the donations that poured in and the volunteers who came forward to help. And an extra special thank you to our amazing staff who have worked so tirelessly over the last couple of weeks

New Site Design

computerAs you've probably noticed, our website has changed. Our thanks to Scott and Cheryl Morris for this new facelift. In addition to the featured pet at the top-left of this page, check out these new sections:

Santa Paws

A special thanks to those of you who visited Santa Paws this year! Despite the change of dates due to the weather, we still managed to see a lot of support and the shelter made over $600! A very special thanks to Patty Geist Photography for her wonderful work! It's not the easiest job trying to get all those dogs to sit still and smile for the camera!

Donations!

I know we are all constantly being "hit up" for donations. Christmas is over and the credit card bills are starting to show up in the mail and it's a tough time of year to be giving.

Please remember that for less than a cup of coffee or a soda a day, you can make the difference in a dog or cat's life. It costs us over $100 to put an animal on the adoption floor and ensure that it goes home healthy.

A check might not always be feasible, but you can donate in other ways. Please check out our want list and see how you can help today!
